CARL CRAIG IS IN THE HOUSE!
Carl Craig was a key player in Detroit techno's second wave, following the futuristic lead of originators Derrick May & Juan Atkins & eventually collaborating with May. With releases under BFC, Psyche, Paper Clip People, 69, Designer Music & Innerzone Orchestra, Carl Craig has more personalities than Sybil. As much as his different guises can confuse, his music is always easily recognized because whatever he does, it retains that certain Craig-ness. A deep commitment to soul and jazz has always been the watermark of his music. Even when Craig is destroying dance floors, there is always a subtleness & attention to detail that separates his music from that of the typical Johnny-come-lately dance music producer.
DIPLO'S TIME
It was Diplo’s collaboration with songstress M.I.A. on her singles “Bucky Done Gun” and “Paper Planes” and the fantastic Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. I mixtape that really shot him to fame. On the other side of things, last year’s critically acclaimed album for Santogold’s self titled debut, with its chill mix of electro/indie/dub/whatever is another product of Diplo’s production. Watch out for Diplo!
THE EXTRAVAGANCE OF JIMI TENOR
One of the most creative artist to come out of Finland, the extravagant and somewhat unworldly Jimi Tenor, a.k.a. Lassi Lehto, has experimented with various music genres over the years. He is known as a productive musician whose work lies beyond current trends and also as a performer who combines the finest elements of afro-american music, electro-funk, spontaneous silliness and shameless glamour in an original way. His audience consists of clubbers and alternative rock enthusiasts looking for new perspective, but also of jazz and funk rebels. Those who understand that even unconventional pop music can move your body and heart.
BERLIN'S FINEST
The six-piece DJ/producer collective Jazzanova, consisting of Alexander Barck, Claas Brieler, Jürgen von Knoblauch, Roskow Kretschmann, Stefan Leisering, and Axel Reinemer, formed in Berlin in 1995. Jazzanova soon became coveted remixers and the group is one of the foremost proponents of the nu-jazz, chillout and jazz house styles of music associated with record labels such as Compost Records and Sonar Kollektiv. For this new edition, Alex Barck will play a special set on saturday night.
MANCHESTER SOUL MAN: TRUS’ME
The name Trus'me, as you might expect, comes from "Trust Me" and it's exactly what David Wolstencroft says to his audiences every night that he DJs. Disco, soul, funk, techno, house. It's all going to come out. "Just trust me that I'm going to make it work." That DJ credo has also spilled over into his production work, which has been celebrated far-and-wide for its "Moodymann with a smile" soul and saw his 2007 album, Working Nights, garner him DJing gigs throughout the world.
LOW CLUB GURU
Fulgeance is PierreTroel, Parisian club guru and creator of his own 'Low Club' genre of Dance music. Over the last few years Pierre started hooking up two akai MPC 2000 drum machines and trying to follow his idols such as Dabrye, Madlib, Prefuse73, ammon Contact, Cymande and Jamie Lidell into shaping experimental hip-hop. Taking his cue from Lidell’s incredible and improvised stage shows, the Fulgeance live experience is livid and boisterous as he cuts between his two digital steeds, a set-up surprisingly rarely seen. Fans of Dabrye, Flying Lotus and hype mongers of Hudson Mohawke et al sit up. This dude is gonna cruise your drives big time.
Elan Mehler's After Suite
Gilles Peterson chanced upon Mehler playing solo piano in a Swiss hotel some three years ago, and was entranced. Brooklyn-based jazz pianist and composer Elan Mehler is that rare thing, a US musician who sounds European. All About Jazz describes is latest album “The After Suite” as a masterpiece with a capital "M." Lots of different music has Soul. Elan Mehler has Soul, give him a try. Keep Diggin’!
D n B WITH A CONSCIENCE
As a crucial member of the respected Full Cycle and Reprazent stables, Suv has undoubtedly contributed his fair share to the development of Drum n Bass and definitely to the sound of Bristol. A member of the seminal 1989 group Fresh Four who burst onto the scene with 'Wishing On A Star', Suv has continued to carve a musical journey both as a solo producer and part of larger conglomerates with Roni Size, Krust and Die always with the intent to break new ground. Recently Suv's music has been inspired by Latin, Asian, Moroccan and Ethnic music in general.
THE UNUSUAL SUSPECT
From the end of the eighties to the mid-nineties, Rob Gallagher, as Earl Zinger is officially known, celebrated huge success as the frontman of the acid jazz pioneers Galliano. In the meantime, Earl Zinger has performed as MC for Gilles Peterson and Kruder & Dorfmeister and concentrated on his Two Banks Of Four project. Zinger owns a well-crafted and impressive resumé. Unfortunately, it is highly fictional. It boasts of his associations with Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs & other luminaries, while touting his influence over such artists as Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. Zinger clearly has a sense of humour, which shows in everything he does.
THE TROUBLE MAKER
DJ Oil has been a respected figure in the club scene in Marseilles since 1988. Musician in several bands, like Troublemakers who released 2 albums between 2000 and 2004, he's been travelling through Africa and Central America for 3 years with his new project Ashes to Machines (with Jeff Sharel), where he played with more than 150 musicians in 29 countries. He'll be presenting his solo project "Watch Your Step" in Sète, with a dj set & live afro jazz, broken rythm and funk... Let's meet on the beach!
JAZZ CLUB IMPRESARIO
Shuya Okino is the DJ / Creative director of Kyoto Jazz Massive and of Tokyo Crossover/Jazz Festival. Shuya has had a huge impact on the music scene in Japan through his DJing, production (Mondo Grosso, Sleepwalker, Cosmic Village, Hajime Yoshizawa, DJ Kawasaki, Root Soul...), his music as Kyoto Jazz Massive with his brother Yoshihiro and recently his solo work with his first album “United Legends”. Shuya Okino continues to be an important figure in the Crossover/Jazz scene worldwide and his work is influential and inspirational to many members of the club music world.
THE ENCHANTING BITTERSWEET HAPPINESS OF...
Hailing from France, Sebastien Schuller is a magnificently unique and complicated artist whose music displays various influences from Radiohead, Bjork, David Bowie, Serge Gainsbourg, and other exceptional artists. He is a classically trained percussionist with the voice of a cross between Thom Yorke and Andrew Bird. Aside from his dream-like vocals, Schuller thrives on enhancing acoustic sounds and natural resonance with touches of electronica. After listening to Schuller, you'd be hard pressed not to call him a master of his art form.
LEAVE IT TO LEFTO
Belgium born LeFtO or LeFtOoO has been diffusing soulful music for the last 10 years on his radio show "The Hop". In 2005 he released a remix album for Blue Note Records called "Out Of The Blue" and several other instrumental beats projects. Although most people know him as a deejay, he has been deejay for Stones Throw artists and Rawkus artists back in the day, mostly into hiphop back then, now totally involved in everything funky & soulful. He will take you into a journey from hiphop to afro and broken beat and back to soul and jazzfunk. All that, blended by his unique mixing-technique firmly rooted in those energetic hip hop skills.
SOUL SEARCHER
Michael Ruetten is a strong figure in the German club scene and known as one of the most traveled djs who spreads the message of jazz related music everywhere in Europe. Michael "Soulpatrol" Rütten is also the man behind, Soulsearching - The Compost Radio Show, that provokes positive feedback from all over the world. Some compare him to a certain mate in the UK, others salute him for dropping the odd techno tune among jazz and worldmusic gems. This is freestyle, done right and in his very unique "soulpatrol" way. Tunes that simply put a shake in your step, sweat on your brow and send shivers up your syncopated spine.
MUSICAL JUICINESS WITH JAZZAMAR
In recent months, a sound has illuminated dance floors around the planet. It is the sound of Nu Tropic which, armed with a small handful of remixes and EPs, has managed to seduce the French, English, New Zealand, Australian, German, Danish, Norwegian, Italian & Spanish public ... Influences of Brazilian music, funk, jazz, can be found in the music they create (and play), while being delivered in a sophisticated approach that does not kill its freshness. At the basis of this collective, we find Luke Tharin, aka Dj Link, and Amar Kabouche, better known under the name Jazzamar.
THE REST OF THE PACK
French Londoner, Son Of Kick is not short of talent trying his hand on everything (producer, DJ, rapper, multi instrumentalist, songwriter) and will take pleasure in sending shockwaves through your spine with one of the fiercest and freshest selection, from electro to breakbeat, ghetto-tek & dubstep to hip hop.
WF SETE 08 - THE AFTERMATH
9.25am Monday - RyanAir back to Stanstead. Tired but still buzzing. It all started last Wednesday - early St Pancras to Paris and down super fast to Sete - 320 kmh - very impressive - apparently (according to Matsuura san) the new magnetic bullet train will beat the SNCF's finest!
Tielle: Octopus Pie from Sète
The fishing of octopus has always been a secondary activity on the Golfe du Lion where Sète is a small but important port. We know that octopus was caught on this coast and shipped to Toulouse in the fourteenth century. There are a few existant octopus recipes from the Middle Ages, and one is an octopus stuffed with mint, parsley, and other herbs found in the anonymous fourteenth-century Catalan cookbook Libre de sent sovì.
